How to NOT become a lawyer...

Having chosen my degree course around three crucial factors:
  1. I didn't know what else to do;
  2. My intelligent friend was doing Law;
  3. I just wanted to go to Uni 
...you'd think I'd be off to a flying start. However after three years of reading ways to make simple agreements between human beings unnecessarily complicated I've now come to the conclusion that Law is not for me. When was this glorious epiphany you might ask? It's difficult to say, but I think that halfway into a telephone interview for a vacation scheme for some law firm I had never heard of and will never care about, could have been when that priceless penny dropped.

Q: "What do you think sets you apart from all other candidates?
*Thinking*: The fact that I would rather eat my own vomit than work for you
A: Because...I'm really...commercially aware...and passionate about working for...your firm. It sounds so...exciting.

Needless to say I didn't get the job. And thank goodness for that. Instead I went on a media course and loved it. And now I find myself pursuing a career in journalism. So I'm writing this blog to narrate my career path; how I'm trying to break into journalism; what works, what doesn't and generally any funny or odd situations I find myself in. I always said as a kid from the age of six or so that I wanted to be a writer. I wish I'd listened to me.

    I would like to add a little disclaimer about the picture (how ironic).

    This is something I saw scratched into one of the tables at the law library at my university. I don't actually think that law is for people who don't have the guts to do what they really want to. I have friends who love law so much it alarms me. I've often wished I was one of them as it would've made the last three years less tedious!

    The comment is applicable to me though. Or rather it WAS applicable to me. This is me having the guts to do what I want to do.

    I think a lot of this resonates with many within the law faculty, whether they'd like to admit it or not. Particularly your reasons for studying law. Hard to justify otherwise why so 'passionate' about a subject you've never studied before...
